The Kentucky Clean Slate Act would provide a path for thousands of people to have their records cleared. These fellow Kentuckians made mistakes but have also repaid their debt to society. They’ve completed their sentences, fulfilled all the requirements of their probation or parole, and stayed crime free for years.
The current process for clearing eligible records can be confusing, expensive, and full of bureaucratic red tape. The Clean Slate Act will automate expungement for people with non-violent criminal records. KYFREE believes these individuals deserve our support as they re-enter the workforce, get an education, reconnect with their families, and work every day to realize their full potential.
Why should conservatives support the Clean Slate Act?
- Rejoining the workforce will strengthen families and transform lives.
- Kentucky’s economy needs people who are ready and willing to work.
- Children need parents to be active in their lives. Clean Slate will open new doors to parents as they work to heal their families.
- Reducing recidivism supports safer communities for all Kentuckians.
- Because bureaucracy shouldn’t be a barrier to an individual’s redemption.
Since our founding, KYFREE has worked to advance criminal justice solutions that strengthen families, enhance public safety, align with our fiscally responsible principles and promote the long-term well-being of communities across Kentucky.
Our approach to criminal justice policy is to balance accountability with redemption, advocate for strategies that make communities safer and support the idea that second chances should be available to Kentuckians who have earned them.
KYFREE’s mission is not simply to influence policy, but to build a stronger, freer Kentucky for generations to come. We encourage members of the General Assembly to learn how this initiative has the potential to transform lives.
